You run a small online store. Maybe it's Shopify, maybe WooCommerce. You sell 30–300 SKUs, you're not doing thousands of dollars of margin decisions per day, and the idea of paying $99–$399/month for a "competitor intelligence platform" feels absurd when you don't even have time to log into a dashboard.
But you've felt the pain. A competitor quietly undercut your best-seller for two weeks and your conversion rate slid with nobody knowing why. Or a rival sold out, and you were the last to notice the moment when you could have raised your own price or pushed a bundle. Store owners describe this as losing deals you didn't know you were losing — the pain isn't curiosity about competitors, it's margin you left on the table.
This guide walks through every realistic way to monitor competitor prices without enterprise software, from $0 to the point where a $99 tool genuinely earns its price. We'll be honest about which options are great and which are a bad fit for a small store — including where our own product, AlertSnail, is not the right answer.
A note on pricing: all figures below are the prices we verified on vendor pricing pages and 2026 review roundups as of late September / early October 2026. Vendors change pricing — always check the current page before buying.
What "monitoring competitor prices" actually means
Before comparing tools, be clear about the job. For a small store, competitor monitoring usually means three things:
- Price changes — a rival's product page moved up or down (and by how much relative to your price).
- Stock changes — a rival sold out (an opportunity) or just restocked (a threat to your promo window).
- Offer changes — bundles, free shipping, discount codes, or "buy X get Y" appearing on a competitor's product or checkout page.
Everything below is judged on one question: how well does this tool tell you when those three things happened, without you having to babysit it?
Tier 0: Free and manual (fine for 3–5 rivals, brutal beyond that)
Manual checks. Bookmark competitor product pages, check them weekly, keep a spreadsheet. For a store watching 3–5 SKUs this honestly works — it's free and you already know your market. It fails the moment your list grows or you go on holiday, and it does nothing overnight when price changes actually happen.
Google Shopping. Search your product name and eyeball the Shopping tab. Good for discovering who else sells an item and roughly where the price band sits, useless for tracking a specific list of competitor URLs over time.
Amazon-only freebies. If your competitors sell on Amazon, two free tools dominate that niche: CamelCamelCamel (free Amazon price-drop alerts for consumers) and Keepa (free price-history charts and alerts; a paid data subscription at €29/month, and API access from around €49/month). Both are excellent — and both only cover Amazon.
Tier 1: Self-hosted — changedetection.io if you want $0 and own a server
changedetection.io is an open-source website-change monitor with 30,000+ GitHub stars. Self-hosted, it's free and unlimited: point it at as many pages as you like, it diffs them and alerts you via 85+ notification types. It even ships with built-in "price tracking" and "restock detection" modes, which cover most of what a small store needs.
The honest tradeoff: you are now the ops team. You run the server, you configure selectors when a site redesigns, and you deal with alert fatigue yourself — the output is raw diffs and screenshots, not analysis. If you're technical and your time is cheap, this is the best $0 option in the category. If you're not technical, a self-hosted tool that spits raw diffs at you is a second job, not a monitoring system.
Tier 2: Cheap hosted watchers ($5–$30/month)
If you don't want to run a server, several hosted tools monitor your competitor pages for single-digit or low-double-digit prices:
- ▸changedetection.io hosted — $8.99/month covers up to 5,000 URLs with 5-minute checks. Same raw-diff model as self-hosted, but they run it. This plan effectively sets a permanent price ceiling for "diff a page and tell me" monitoring — nothing should charge much more for just that.
- ▸Wachete — free for 5 monitors (daily checks); paid from $5.40/month (50 pages, hourly) to $10.90 (100 pages, 10-minute checks). Notably, it sends daily/weekly digest roll-up emails rather than a ping per change, and can monitor pages behind logins.
- ▸Visualping — the category leader for page-change watching. Free tier (5 pages, 150 checks/month); Personal from $10/month (10 pages); Business from $100/month. It has leaned hard into AI: change summaries and an "IMPORTANT" flag that tries to judge whether a change matters — which is a clue about where this whole category is going.
- ▸Distill.io — power-user favorite; free tier, paid from roughly $12–15/month, with local browser checks as fast as 5 seconds.
- ▸Hexowatch — free 75 checks/month; Pro $29/month; 13 monitor types including a dedicated price-change monitor.
- ▸modsignal — $19–25/month, one of the newer entrants selling "semantic judgment": AI decides whether a change actually matters before alerting you.
- ▸Budget options like Sken.io (from €3/month) and PageCrawl.io (roughly $6.66–13.33/month on annual billing) exist too — fine for simple pages, thin on e-commerce-specific features.
These tools all share the same structural limitation for a store owner: they watch pages, not your business. You still define what matters, you still read every diff, screenshot, or summary, and you still do the comparison against your prices in your head or in a spreadsheet. A founder on r/microsaas summed up the complaint pattern behind a wave of new tools: the outputs are raw diffs, "you still have to read through it to find the one line that matters."
Tier 3: Dedicated price trackers ($49+/month)
These are built specifically for competitor pricing in e-commerce:
- ▸Pricefy — $49/month for 100 SKUs, $99/month for 2,000 SKUs, with twice-daily price updates. The cheapest credible per-SKU dedicated tracker.
- ▸Prisync — the transparent self-serve benchmark of the category: $99/month for 100 products, $199 for 1,000, $399 for 5,000, with unlimited competitors tracked and three-times-daily updates (API access +20%). A tracked lower Starter tier sits at $59/month (100 products, daily updates). They offer a 14-day trial with no card required. At the small tier that's roughly $0.99 per product per month.
- ▸Price2Spy — a legacy player with partially hidden pricing; it bills per monitored URL, which means your own product page and each competitor's page count, a model buyers frequently complain about.
- ▸Competera, Minderest, Wiser, Intelligence Node — quote-only enterprise suites; $5K+/month territory. Not for small stores.
Prisync and Pricefy are genuinely good products, and they do something the cheap watchers don't: they understand products (SKUs, variants, competitor relationships, market positions) rather than page diffs. What's more, price monitoring done at this level is directly revenue-linked — Prisync itself markets merchant margin lifts of 3–20%. That's exactly why the pricing is what it is.
It's also why a lot of small stores stall at the checkout. If you're watching 5–20 competitor SKUs and you have maybe an hour a week for "pricing work," $99/month buys you a dashboard with features you won't use, an update cadence you don't need, and a learning curve you don't have time for. There's a real structural gap between the "$8.99 raw watcher" and the "$99 price-intelligence platform," and most small stores fall into it.
The honest comparison table
| Option | Real cost | Covers | What you still do yourself | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual + spreadsheet | $0 | 3–5 SKUs realistically | Everything, forever | Pre-launch, tiny catalogs |
| Keepa / CamelCamelCamel | Free–€29/mo | Amazon only | Interpreting, non-Amazon rivals | Amazon sellers |
| changedetection.io (self-hosted) | $0 + your server | Unlimited pages | Running it, reading raw diffs, comparing to your prices | Technical founders |
| changedetection.io (hosted) | $8.99/mo | Up to 5,000 URLs | Reading diffs, judging what matters, comparing to your prices | Cheap reliable "did anything change" |
| Wachete | $5.40–10.90/mo | 50–100 pages | Same, though weekly roll-ups help | Digest-email fans on a budget |
| Visualping | $10+/mo (free tier) | 10+ pages | Reading summaries, price comparison vs your store | Visual/important-change flagging |
| Hexowatch / Distill / modsignal | $12–29/mo | Varies | Reading alerts, business interpretation | Power users, semantic filtering |
| Pricefy | $49/mo per 100 SKUs | SKU-level price/stock | Acting on dashboards | Small stores wanting real price tooling cheap |
| Prisync | $99/mo per 100 products | SKU-level, 3× daily, API | Learning the platform, acting | Growing stores, multi-market catalogs |
| AlertSnail | $19–79/mo | 10–200 competitor SKUs (price, stock, offers) | Only the decision — the digest tells you what moved, how it compares to you, and a suggested action | Stores that want the answer, not another dashboard |
The missing middle: a digest, not a dashboard
Notice the pattern: below $30 you get page-change tools that hand you data; above $49–$99 you get price suites that hand you a workstation. Almost nobody is selling the thing a small store actually wants, which is a conclusion: something you read in two minutes on Monday morning that already knows what matters to your margins.
That's the gap we built AlertSnail to fill, and the positioning is deliberately narrow:
- ▸You connect 5–30 competitor product URLs (your own storefronts and Google Shopping results — public pages, no marketplace ToS games).
- ▸An AI operator checks price, stock, and offer changes 1–3× per day.
- ▸Every Monday (and Thursday if something big moved), you get a plain-language digest: what changed, how each move compares against your price, one line of recommended action, and a screenshot of the competitor page as evidence — because an alert you can't verify is a rumor.
- ▸No dashboard is required. The email is the product. Pricing is $19/month for 10 SKUs, $39/month for 50 SKUs with stock alerts, and $79/month for 200 SKUs with API/CSV and Slack delivery — squarely between the raw watchers and the $99+ platforms.
- ▸A 14-day pilot, no card required, so you can judge the signal quality against a real week of your market.
When AlertSnail is NOT the right choice
In the spirit of the honesty this guide is trying to model:
- ▸You need automated repricing. We report; we don't (yet) push price changes to your store. If rule-based repricing is the core need, Prisync is the better product.
- ▸You track thousands of SKUs or many marketplaces. At 1,000+ products the per-SKU math of a Prisync or Pricefy works out and their depth pays off.
- ▸You only sell on Amazon. Keepa is free-ish, purpose-built, and unbeatable there.
- ▸You love configuring diff engines. Self-hosted changedetection.io is unlimited and $0; if that's fun for you, genuinely — go enjoy it.
A simple way to choose
- ▸Watching ≤5 competitors, have a weekend? changedetection.io self-hosted or hosted at $8.99. Read it once a week, keep the spreadsheet.
- ▸Watching 10–50 SKUs, hate reading diffs, want weekly answers for <$40? A digest product is the category you're shopping for — AlertSnail is the one we know best, and we'd encourage you to pilot it (free, 14 days) and judge the output.
- ▸Watching 100–2,000 SKUs, need API/repricing, price is a business line item? Pay for Pricefy ($49) or Prisync ($99+). They're priced for that job and they do it well.
The expensive mistake isn't choosing the wrong tool. It's either paying $99 for a dashboard you never open, or paying $9 for a watcher that buries the one change that mattered under 400 raw diffs. Whichever you pick, put it on a calendar: monitoring you don't read is just scraping with extra steps.
AlertSnail is an AI-run competitor price & stock digest for small e-commerce stores: connect your competitor URLs, read Monday's email, act on it. $19–79/month, 14-day free pilot, no card required.
Stop babysitting competitor tabs
AlertSnail watches your rivals' prices and stock 4x daily and emails you a plain-language digest with a recommended action. No dashboard required.
